The Grey Labkrauteule ( Chersotis margaritacea ), also known as Bright rock Lawn Erdeule or Pearl Erdeule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 34 to 40 millimeters. The forewing color is ashen. The thorax is light gray, the head whitish. On Costalrand between ring and kidney blemish, a nearly square black-brown stain, which is sometimes slightly notched from below as well as three other smaller dark spots located at the edge Kostal. Egg, caterpillar, pupa

Similar Species

The type is similar to the late-summer horror Bodeneule ( Eugnorisma glareosa ), but at Costalrand has several somewhat more pronounced character.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widespread throughout southern Europe and central Europe to northern Belgium, the northern edge of the highlands, south-eastern Poland, Ukraine (Crimea ) and the North Caucasus. It also occurs in North Africa (Algeria, Morocco), Asia Minor, Lebanon, Israel, Iran, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan and to the Altai.

It is mainly found in warm areas with limestone and inhabited among other sunny slopes and screes. In Spain, it has been found up to 1,580 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The Grey Labkrauteule is one generation per year, flying the moth from late June to early September. They are nocturnal and come out on artificial light sources and visit the bait. The caterpillars live from September to bedstraw species ( Galium ) or hill - Meier ( Asperula cynanchica ). They usually feed at night, overwinter and pupate until May of the following year.

Endangering

The species is in many northern areas of very rare or absent in Germany and is on the Red List of endangered species in category 3 ( endangered) performed in Baden- Württemberg it is near threatened.

There are three subspecies:

  • Chersotis margaritacea margaritacea ( Villers, 1789)
  • Chersotis margaritacea atlanticola swing shot, 1955, Morocco and Algeria
  • Chersotis margaritacea orophila addition, in 1967, Morocco and Algeria

Its status as a subspecies has yet to be confirmed. Most of the other subspecies and varieties were reunited by Fibiger (1993 ) with the Nominatunterart. Conversely, presented the former subspecies Cyrnea winder, 1908 by Corsica as an independent species out.
