Chess City

Chess City is a mainly used for chess events complex located in the Kalmyk capital, Elista, which was initiated by the World Chess Federation President and Kalmyk President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in personal union and completed on 30 September 1998.

The construction cost for the complex was estimated by chess experts to be 30 to 50 million U.S. dollars. The editor of the opposition newspaper Sovetskaya Kalmykija Menke Konwejew considers the sources and heights of the money used could not know you.

The first discharged in Chess City event was the Chess Olympiad 1998. Chess City was also the venue for the World Chess Championship for women 2004 and the World Chess Championship 2006.

Dubai

Ilyumzhinov planned in 2004 the construction of another Chess City in Dubai, for which 9.6 billion UAE dirhams (after the fixed rate equivalent of about 2.6 billion U.S. dollars) were estimated. The plans for the complex with 32 to 64- storey hotel buildings in pawn form, would also have the new FIDE headquarters to be, were adjusted during the financial crisis.
