In the 33rd Chess Olympiad in 1998 in Elista 110 teams played, including Russia, B, C Russia and Russia D ( Kalmykia ) in the open group. The tournament was the Chess Palace.

In the first three places, the teams from Russia ( 35.5 board points), the U.S. ( 34.5 ) and Ukraine ( 32.5 ) came.

The Olympic champion Russia played with the players Peter Svidler ( 5 ½ out of 9), Sergei Rublevsky (5 of 8 ), Evgeny Bareev (5 of 8 ), Alexander Morozevich ( 8 out of 10, Silver Medal ), Vadim Zviagintsev ( 5 ½ out of 8) and Konstantin Sakaev ( 6 ½ out of 9).

The German men came in 6th place and played with Artur Yusupov ( 7 ½ out of 12 ), Rustem Dautov ( 6 ½ out of 11 ), Christopher Lutz ( 4 ½ out of 8 ), Robert Hübner ( 5 ½ out of 8 ), Eric Lobron ( 4 ½ out of 9) Christian Gabriel ( 3 ½ out of 6 ) and Thomas Luther ( 4 of 7).

Teams of women

China won the women (29 board points), followed by Russia (27) and Georgia (27). China joined with Xie Jun ( 7 points from 10 games), to Zhu Chen (8 of 11), Wang Pin ( 6 from 9) and Wang Lei ( 8 of 9, Gold Medal ).

The German women were ranked number 16 and played with Ketino Kachiani - Gersinska ( 8 ½ out of 12 ), Marina Olbrich ( 5 ½ out of 10), Anke Koglin (7 of 11) and Elisabeth Pähtz ( 1 of 6).

The Chess Olympiad is a team tournament. 13 rounds were played according to the Swiss System in Elista. In the Swiss system each evaluation teams are equal among themselves drawn. Each team (Team ) was per team fight use four players. The team competition four single points (board points) will be awarded, which are given in the following table of the 13 laps under the code of the opponent team. The code is a short code for the teams. The result of a team match, the team points (win = 2, draw = 1, loss = 0). In addition, the numbers of recovered, indecisive and lost battles are listed ( = -).
