Chief engineer

The Chief Engineer ( LI, also Chief Technical Officer ) on a vessel is responsible for the proper regulations, safe and efficient operation of the machinery and all auxiliary machinery on board. He is the superior of any other Technical Officers ( marine engineers ) and the crew of the range machine.

As part of its responsibilities, the Senior Technical Officer reported not only to the captain on board, but also the technical inspection on land.

The LI must have a corresponding patent, which he may acquire after a study, and has the rank of an officer.

On smaller vessels with mitfährt no officer in the corresponding function, analogue is often the highest ranks of the technical department, such as a boat man addressed as " Chief ", although this does not hold the position formally.

On submarines, the LI in addition the command for the operation of the hydroplane and the dive and control cells with which the depth is controlled. In English and American ships, where this term has become established throughout the commercial shipping, the appropriate officer rank is designated as Chief Engineer or Chief shortly.
