Chillisquaque Creek

The Chillisquaque Creek is a 32.5 km long tributary of the West Branch Susquehanna River and flows through the counties Columbia, Montour and Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States.

As part of the water system of the Chesapeake Bay of Chillisquaque Creek areas drained by four counties (the three mentioned and Lycoming ). The river flows in a southwesterly direction through sandstone, shale and limestone a valley of the Appalachian Mountains.

In 2000, on the 290 km ² and 6620 people lived in the catchment area of the river 67.9 % rural and 29.5 % forest land.

Name

According Donehoo Chillisquaque is a corruption of Chililisuagi, which means as much as the place of snow birds in the language of the Shawnee. Near the mouth of the river was located since about 1728 a village of Shawnee, which is mentioned in the reports of several earlier colonists. In the earliest mention of the river and the village, a petition from the Shawnees to the Province of Pennsylvania, they are called Shallyschohking. Conrad Weiser chose the spelling Zilly - squachne, as he crossed on his way north to Onondaga, the capital of the Iroquois, the river and traveled through the village. Dating back to 1754 the spelling Chelisquaqua and appears in Sculls map from 1759 Chillisquaquy. 1770, when the first settlers arrived here, is used in another map of Scull today's spelling. These are all variations of Chalakatha, one of the five Shawnee tribal clans and the village in which she lived clan.

After the river today's townships Chillisquaque East and West Chillisquaque were named as well as the dependent village in the latter township, all of which are located in Northumberland County.
