Chinese hamster ovary cell

When CHO cells, abbreviated from engl. Chinese Hamster Ovary is an immortalized cell line derived from Chinese hamster ovary ( Cricetulus griseus ) denotes that for the production of recombinant proteins is used in cell biology and biotechnology. There are different cell lines with different genetic alterations.

The immortalized cell line was originally isolated in 1957 by Theodore T. Puck from a primary culture of ovarian cells of Chinese hamster.

The CHO cell line is one of the cell lines most commonly used in the biotechnological production of substances such as therapeutic antibodies. Almost 70% of the recombinantly produced proteins destined for therapeutic use are now expressed in CHO cells.
