Chips Rafferty

Chips Rafferty ( born March 26, 1909 in Broken Hill, † May 27, 1971 in Sydney) was an Australian actor and film producer.

Life and work

Rafferty was in his early teens drovers in the outback, miners in an opal mine and sailor. In the late 1930s he tried his hand as an actor and found access to the film. The breakthrough came in the great bustle, as trek leader Dan McAlpine, who drove a large herd of 1942 before the Japanese feared access over 1600 miles in the south of Australia. Another success celebrated the lanky Rafferty in gold mining as Peter Lalor in his self-determination struggle against a British governor.

His popularity earned him even offers from the UK and Hollywood, where he did not but it past minor supporting roles. In 1952 he founded the production company Play type Productions, 1953, the film company Southern International, however, could not be maintained against the overwhelming Anglo-American competition.
