Chiriqui olingo

Bassaricyon Paul is a kind of Makibären, which occurs in Panama and possibly in Costa Rica. The species status is disputed.

Features

The species is similar to the other Makibären. The weight is, as with all Makibären ranging from 1 kg to 1.5 kg.

Distribution and habitat

Bassaricyon Paul is known by only a single type specimen from Panama, which originates in the Chiriqui region between the rivers Rio Chriqui Viejo and Rio Colorado. It was caught in the mountains at an altitude of about 4,800 m. Perhaps the species occurs beyond in the southeast of Costa Rica ( Cordillera de Talamanca ).

Way of life

Over the life of this type is not known. Other types of Makibären are nocturnal, arboreal loners who feed on fruits and insects and moist forests inhabit.

Bassaricyon Paul is currently considered as a separate type of Makibären. The species status is disputed. Maybe Bassaricyon Paul represents only a subspecies of the bush -tailed Olingo

Threats and conservation

The species was " threatened " as ( Endangered ) classified. Due to lack of information and unsecured taxonomic relationships Bassaricyon Paul currently classified by the IUCN in any hazard class (data deficient ) is. Scientific studies to assess the taxonomic relationships are necessary to determine the current threat situation. Information on the population density are difficult to prove, since in the distribution area occurs the similar Wickelbär and both types can be easily confused in the field. Makibären are generally considered rare. The species occurs in several protected areas.
