Chishu Ryu

Chishu Ryu (Japanese笠 智 众; born May 13, 1904 in Tamamizu, Tamana -gun (now Tamana ), Kumamoto Prefecture, † March 16, 1993 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture) was a Japanese actor who primarily for his roles the films of the director Ozu Yasujirō had become known. He appeared in over 160 films.

The son of a Buddhist priest studied at Buddhist universities in Kyoto and Tokyo. From 1925 he secretly took acting lessons. In 1926 he signed a contract with the film company Shochiku and worked for 10 years as an extra and bit player. His first appearance before the camera was in the late 1920s yume in the Ozu film Wakōdo no. The first major role in Ozu's first sound film had Ryu Hitori Musuko (1936 ) as a teacher of film heroes.

Is particularly well known in Europe the work of the trip to Tokyo, from 1953, in which Ryu played the lead role. He played in many other Ozu films, and also in all of its six color films, Good Morning 1959 An autumn afternoon in 1962, he played the lead role. After Ozu's death in 1963 Ryu still played with in several television series and films. From 1969 to 1992 he played the role of an ancient Buddhist high priest in the television comedy series Otoko wa tsuraiyo.
