Division

Chittagong ( Bengali: চট্টগ্রাম, Caṭṭagrām, Chattagram ) is a city in Bangladesh. With 2,123,709 inhabitants in the city proper and 3,672,366 in the agglomeration (as of 1 January 2005) it is also the second largest city in the country, after the capital Dhaka and Khulna before. In addition, the city is the administrative center of the eponymous district and Chittagong division of the same name.

Geography

Chittagong is located in the southeast of the country and is surrounded by palm trees, green hills and rivers.

History

Since the 9th century, Chittagong belonged to the kingdom of Arakan, 1666 to Bengal and in 1760 it was ceded to the British.

Easter 1930 it came to Chittagong Uprising, one of the major uprisings against British colonial rule in which two barracks were stormed, led by Surya Sen.

In December 2010, there were violent clashes in Chittagong between textile workers and security forces. Three people died and 185 others were injured. The riots broke out because some companies are not held to the legally established minimum wage.

Demography

In the metropolitan region of Chittagong 3.7 million people live. Islam is the most widespread religion. Muslims make up 84 percent of the population, Hindus 14 percent and Theravada Buddhists 2 percent.
