Chodsigoa

Chodsigoa is a largely unknown mammal genus from the family of shrews ( Soricidae ). The corresponding eight species live in eastern Asia.

General

It is comparatively small shrews. The body length is about 45 to 70 mm and its weight is around 5 grams. The coat is soft and dense, its color varies at the top of reddish brown to black, the underside is lighter.

Habitat of these animals are moist woodlands, bush country and sometimes cultivated regions. The diet should consist of insects and earthworms. Otherwise, nothing is known about their way of life.

System

In some classifications Chodsigoa considered as a subgenus of Soriculus, but recent works such as Wilson & Reeder ( 2005), firm as an independent genus. This division is based, among other things with a smaller number of teeth ( 28 vs. 30 in Soriculus ).

We distinguish eight types:

  • Chodsigoa caovansunga was first described scientifically in 2003. The species lives in the Vietnamese province of Ha Giang.
  • Chodsigoa hypsibia is located in central and southern China.
  • Chodsigoa lamula also lives in central and southern China.
  • Chodsigoa parca is widespread in southern China and the northern regions of Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Chodsigoa parva lives in southern China ( Yunnan ).
  • Chodsigoa salenskii is only known from a single specimen from Sichuan. The IUCN lists the species as " threatened with extinction " ( critically endangered ).
  • Chodsigoa smithii inhabited the central regions of China.
  • Chodsigoa sodalis is endemic to Taiwan.
