Chomutov District

The Okres Chomutov ( German: District Chomutov, during the German occupation from 1938 to 1945 Chomutov district ) was a town in the Ústí nad Labem Region ( Ústí nad Labem ) in the Czech Republic. The Okresy were comparable to those counties in Germany in about and were wound up on 31 December 2002.

Okres Chomutov spreads in the southwestern part of the Ústí nad Labem Region (Czech Republic) from. At 935 km ² approximately 125,000 inhabitants in eight cities and 36 municipalities with 173 districts.

The district can be divided into four regions, all of which have each special characteristics:

  • Erzgebirge ( Ore Mountains ), which occupies 41 % of the area and is the oldest geological formation. This area plays an important role in the climatic range and as a water reservoir. The 1974 scale dam Preßnitz supplies drinking water
  • Brüx pool ( Mostecký úval ) with rich deposits of lignite
  • Saaz pool ( Žatecká pánev ), an agriculturally profitable area
  • Doupov Mountains ( Doupovské hory)

Forests account for about 30 % of the area and are currently being replanted after the great forest dieback in the 1970s.

The district of Chomutov was the industrial center of heavy industry, power generation, steel processing and mining. By restructuring and closures in the last decade, it lost its importance and this led to the same increase in the unemployment rate up to 17%.
