Choo Hoey

Choo Hoey ( born October 20, 1934 in Palembang ) is a Singaporean conductor of Chinese origin.

Choo was born as the child of Chinese immigrants in Sumatra. In 1946 he came with his family to Singapore. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he made ​​his debut in 1958 with the Orchestre National de Belgique. He has conducted a number of renowned European orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de la Société du Conservatoire, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. In Greece, he headed the Athens State Orchestra ( Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών ), the Orchestra of the Greek National Opera ( Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή ) and the Orchestra of the Greek Radio and Television.

In 1978 he was engaged as principal conductor and musical director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO ), which he directed until 1996, and led to international success. In addition, he worked on as a guest conductor in Europe and worked with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing. His repertoire includes classical and romantic European music literature as well as works of Asian composers. Among the soloists who appeared under his direction, including, inter alia, Li Chuan Yun, Lynnette Seah, Kun Woo Paik, and Lang Lang.
