Christian Ehler

Jan Christian Ehler ( born August 17, 1963 in Munich) is a German politician ( CDU). Since 2004 he is member of the European Parliament.

Education and work

After graduation in 1984 at the State Landschulheim Marquartstein Ehler completed in 1986 to study journalism, political science and economics at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University Munich (LMU ) and the American University Washington, DC. Since December 2001, he joined the CDU district executive Upper Havel and since May 2003, the CDU state Board of Brandenburg. From November 2000 to October 2010 was Ehler state chairman of the SME and Business Association (MIT) of the CDU Brandenburg. Since the 2009 European election (7th legislature ) Ehler is Chairman of the Delegation for relations with the United States. Ehler is a member of the Conference of Delegation Chairmen. He is a regular member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence. Since 2010, Ehler is chairman of the bipartisan committee preparing for the Research Framework Programme. Ehler is one of two rapporteurs for the new research framework program " Horizon 2020 ", where it is the largest research and innovation program in the world.

As Chairman of the Delegation for relations with the United States in the European Parliament Ehler is at the same time together with Mario Diaz- Balart (Member of the U.S. House of Representatives ) Chairman of the Transatlantic Legislators ' Dialogue ( TLD German: Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue ). In addition, Ehler, together with the Chairman of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, Elmar Brok (CDU ) as co -chair of the Steering Committee TLD (TLD Steering Committee ). In collaboration with the Delegation for relations with the United States, the U.S. Congress and the Conference of Committee Chairmen in the European Parliament, the Steering Committee coordinates the transatlantic contacts.

The inter-parliamentary relationship between the EU and the U.S. can be traced back to the year 1972 and deals with various topics in the areas of foreign and trade policy, economic and financial policy, energy and climate protection and civil liberties. Delegations of Congress and the European parliament meet several times a year and have regular telephone conferences on current issues ( among other things at the moment on the negotiations for an EU -US Free Trade Agreement).
