Christian Rohlfs

Christian Rohlfs ( born November 22, 1849 in Groß Niendorf, Segeberg; † January 8, 1938 in Copenhagen ) was a German painter of modern times.

Life

1851 moved with his parents to Rohlfs Fredesdorf to. In 1864 he fell from a tree and suffered a serious leg injury. The attending physician, Dr. Ernst Stolle, a brother of Theodor Storm, gave him against boredom drawing materials and realized shortly after the boy, whom he promoted henceforth artistic talent. From 1866 Rohlfs attended the grammar school in Segeberg. On the recommendation of Storms learned Rohlfs 1870 in Berlin painter and art writer Ludwig Pietsch know that this in turn recommended to the Grand Ducal Art School in Weimar, where he ( histories and figure painting ) received a free place at Paul Thumann. At this early stage, he created mainly naturalistic works. Due to a renewed leg disease (chronic osteomyelitis ) had a leg amputated in 1873, 1874 Rohlfs took his studies at.

From 1884 he was a freelance artist in Weimar and turned increasingly to Impressionism. In 1901 he moved to the invitation of Karl Ernst Osthaus to Hagen, where he taught at the Folkwang School. Around 1910 Rohlfs is unique to the expressionists. In his motives moved at this time cityscapes, landscapes and architecture in the center. From 1927 he was every year - mostly from spring to December - in Ascona, where he devoted himself mainly plant designs.

After the exhibition "Degenerate Art" in 1937 in Munich Rohlfs numerous works were confiscated, including from the former Christian Rohlfs - Museum in Hagen ( today Osthaus Museum Hagen) around 450 works. On September 13, 1937 Joseph Goebbels noted in his diary: "With cousin topic degenerate art. He wanted to take Rohlfs in protection. But I heal him. " The artist was forbidden to paint and was on January 7, 1938 excluded one day before his death, from the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.

As one of the major German Expressionist painters he developed this at the beginning of the 20th century in an independent form, and worked for a time with Emil Nolde together. The color is the most important vehicle of expression of his works, mainly landscapes and floral still lifes.

His tomb in Hagen is decorated with a cast of the 1931 created by Ernst Barlach plastic and teaches Christ.

Some of his works have been exhibited posthumously at the documenta 1 in 1955 in Kassel.

In Osthaus Museum Hagen, a space for him is established. In addition, in the Hagen district hasp is a school, the Christian Rohlfs high school named after him.
