Christian VI of Denmark

Christian VI. (Born 30 Novemberjul / December 10 1699greg in Copenhagen. . † August 6, 1746 in Hørsholm ) was King of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Schleswig and Holstein, Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from 1730 until his death.

Life and work

Christian VI. was the second son of Frederick IV of Denmark and his wife Louise of Mecklenburg.

The Christian's rule is marked by a severe economic crisis in Denmark, but also a time when the entire kingdom as he was for many years at war. The King and his wife were pronounced pietistic, what the Danish people had, among other things, the obligation to attend church result. He lived a secluded life of the population; traveling the windows were draped in the royal carriage always. Christian VI. nevertheless demonstrated absolute power, especially by the construction of locks Christiansborg and Hørsholm ( Hirschholm ). His wife's brother, Margrave Friedrich Ernst from the Brandenburg- Kulmbach, he gave to the wedding the Good Drage in Schleswig -Holstein.

He was married to Sophie Magdalene of Brandenburg- Kulmbach; from the marriage had three children:

  • Frederick V (* March 31, 1723; † January 14, 1766 ), King of Denmark
  • Louise (* June 19, 1724, † December 20, 1724 ), Princess of Denmark
  • Louise (* October 19, 1726; † August 8, 1756 ), Duchess of Saxe- Hildburghausen.

Others

After King Christian VI. is named in Hamburg, the classical language high school Christianeum. Christian VI. is the eponym of the Christian Church in Hamburg- Ottensen, consecrated on 20 July 1738.
