Christopher Paudiß

Christoph (er) Paudiß (* 1630 in Lower Saxony, † 1666 in Freising, Bavaria ) was a Bavarian Baroque painter, and in his early years a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam.

Life

After many stations, for example, in Stuttgart ( 1656), Prague, Dresden ( 1659-1660 ), Vienna and Salzburg, he has been the last four years of his life court painter to the Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigmund von Freising. He was married twice. Throughout his life he had to struggle with economic difficulties. He died shortly after he had withdrawn his promotion during a ( lost of Paudiß ) Artist Competition of the Prince-Bishop.

Work

His paintings and frescoes often depict gloomy designed everyday motifs. He was based on the art of Rembrandt. Famous are his genre pictures, Bauer histories and still lifes; Portraits he painted, however, rare. The Freising Diocesan Museum has the largest collection of his paintings ( 15, of which five loans ). There was in 2007 an exhibition Christopher Paudiß - The Bavarian Rembrandt? instead.
