Church of St Philibert, Tournus

The Benedictine Abbey of Tournus is a former Benedictine monastery in the town of Tournus Burgundy in France.

History

The monastery was built at the site where the saint was buried Valerian, who suffered martyrdom for 178 faith in Christ. Early developed a pilgrimages to his grave.

875 moved here Charles the Bald Benedictine monks, on an Atlantic island off the Loire estuary brought the relics of St. Philibert of their earlier, threatened by the Normans Abbey Noirmoutier. The existing church of Tournus was then enlarged for the new monastery. 937 the monastery and the church were destroyed and rebuilt after 949. In 1007 burned down large parts of the monastery, the monastery church was built again from around 1020. 1120 the new church was consecrated by Pope Calixtus II.

1627 the Benedictine monastery was dissolved and replaced by a canon - pin. This was also dissolved in 1785. 1790 was the possession by the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) to the town of Tournus. From 1802 services were held in the church again. 1841-1851 the church was restored by the architect Charles -Auguste Questel.

Monastic

The abbey church is Grade II listed as a monument historique ( historic monument '). More protected parts of the former monastery, the Brickyard ( tuilerie du Moutier ) from the 16th century, the tower of Trésorier (also Aumonerie ) from the 17th century, remains of the old defensive walls, the tower of Quincampoix and the curtain that is in the East connects to it, the two towers at the entrance to the monastery, the tower called Le Portier at the corner of Rue Fénelon, the remains of the early Romanesque cloister together with the fountain and the arcade, the " flight into Egypt " ( la fuite en Egypte ) is called, also the two-storey abbot's house from the 15th century, the three-aisled chapter-house from the 13th century, the refectory and two old cellars from the 12th century, the Les Grandes Caves ( the large basement ') are called.

Abbey

This church is one of the most important pre-Romanesque religious buildings in France. It was built from 1000 and consecrated in 1019. The Seitenschiffsjoche are closed with cross vaults. The transept is dominated by the dome of the Vierungsturmes from the 12th century.
