Cimarron is a village in Colfax County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 917 inhabitants (as of 2000).

Geography

The place is located in the southwest of the county, in the north- east of New Mexico, about 20 miles from Colorado is in the north away and has a total area of 5.0 km ² without significant water surface. To the west lies the Philmont Scout Ranch, a theme park of the Boy Scouts of America. Also nearby is the Chase Ranch, the original location of the first Marlboro Man commercials.

History

1842 came the trappers Lucien B. Maxwell in this area, worked on the Beaubien - Miranda ranch and married a daughter of the owner. The dowry was 15,000 acre. In 1858 he built his own building on the site of the present town and was in the following years for the most ranchers in the United States with a land area of 1.7 million acres. 1872-1882 Cimarron was the county seat ( county seat ).

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 917 people in 382 households and 255 families. The population density was 185 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 77.5 % White, 0.1 % African American, 1.1 % Native American, 0.1 % Asian and other groups.

Of the 382 households out of which 34.0 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.2 % were married couples living together, 8.1 % had a female householder with no husband, and 33.0 % were non-families, 29.1 % of all households are made up and 13.6% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.89.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 27.0 % under the age of 18, 7.6 % from 18 to 24, 25.1% between 25 and 44 years, 24.1% between 45 and 64 years and 16.1% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 106.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 102.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,875, and the median income for a family was $ 30,677. Males have a median income of $ 26,125, women $ 19,792. The per capita income was $ 14,248. 9.1% of families and 12.5 % of the population were below the poverty line.
