Clann na Talmhan

Clann na Talmhan ( Irish for party of the "land "; meaning the farmer ) was a political party in Ireland.

Clann na Talmhan 1938 in Athenry ( Co. Galway ) by Michael Donnellan founded with the aim to represent the farmers in Ireland politically. Other objectives were to strengthen the interests of small landowners, state support for land reclamation, reduction of property taxes on farmland and increased afforestation.

The party held its first meeting at the election in 1943 and immediately won 14 seats. Nevertheless Donnellan resigned as leader and was replaced by Joseph Blowick. Clann na Talmhan was part of the coalition government 1948-1951 and 1954-1957, respectively Blowick got the ministerial post of Agriculture and Donnellan was parliamentary secretary.

During the reign of the party, however, lost its position and more and more voters tended to Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael. Clann na Talmhan always saw himself as a very narrow and regional organization and made a few institutions and the non-agricultural parts of Ireland to "conquer". 1961 were to play the only TDs and the party actually listened to a role in politics thorn and Ellan Blowick. As Donnellan died in 1964, his son at the party Fine Gael. Blowick did not start at the next election in 1965, which marked the end of the party.
