Claremont is a city in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is located in Sullivan County. It is the only city in Sullivan County.

Geography

The city is located on the Connecticut River, the western boundary of the town is the Connecticut River, which is also the state's border with Vermont. East of Claremont flows the Sugar River, which empties into the Connecticut River.

History

Claremont was founded in 1762 by Governor Benning Wentworth as Claremint Castel. Since 1764 she is an independent municipality ( Town ), and since 1947 she has city rights ( City).

At the Sugar River flourished in the textile, paper, and machinery factories that used the slope of the river to drive their machines. Thus, the city became a small industrial center of the region.

Between 1850 and 1880, the population held around the 4,000 inhabitants. After 1880, it rose to 1905 to more than 7,000 residents to, due to the demand for more workers to the expanding industry.

Traffic

On Interstate 91 it takes about 5 minutes to reach Weathersfield. On Interstate 89 takes around 30 minutes to reach Lebanon.
