Clarence Lorenzo Simpson

Clarence Lorenzo Simpson ( * 1896, † 1969) was from 1944 to 1952 vice-president of Liberia. 1952 Simpson became the first Ambassador of Liberia to the United States.

Life

The scoring for the wealthy upper class of Americo Clarence Lorenzo Simpson was born in 1896, after school education he studied until 1921 in Monrovia Law at the College of West Africa and the Liberia College.

In the government of Liberian President Edwin Barclay Simpson was Secretary of State from 1934 to 1943. Among his companions of politicians and lawyer William S. Tubman, 1937-1943 Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Liberia belonged. Tubman played together with Simpson the presidential campaign of 1944, and nominated him for vice president. In this role, Simpson took 1945 as the representative of Liberia participated in the founding meeting of the United Nations in New York. Simpson moved to the end of his vice-presidency in the diplomatic service and was on 21 April 1952 until his retirement, Ambassador of Liberia to the United States.

Simpson was one of the most important confidant of U.S. governments in Liberia.

  • In the 1930s, during his time as Secretary of State of the smooth structure of the Firestone plantation was one of his main activities, Simpson acquired through frequent contacts with the U.S. embassy also a good relationship with the American administration of the plantation, and often served as a mediator.
  • During the Second World War, Simpson was charged with the projects to build American military bases in Liberia and had in 1940 a meeting with U.S. Admiral David M. LeBreton aboard the cruiser USS Omaha off the coast of Monrovia.

Family

  • In his autobiography, it is known that in 1878 arrived the coming of the American South parents of Clarence Lorenzo Simpson, with the support of the American Colonization Society in the Central State Monrovia.
  • His son Clarence Lorenzo Simpson Jr., born in 1933 in Monrovia, made a career as a Liberian politician and was again active under President Tubman as Minister of Justice.
