Clarens, Free State

The town of Clarens is situated in the municipality Dihlabeng, Thabo Mofutsanyane district, Free State Province in South Africa. 2011, it had 6,379 inhabitants. It is located on 1,891 meters above sea level. The area around Clarens is known for its sandstone mountains, which in the lithostratigraphy of South Africa and the Clarens Sandstone Formation was named. The distance to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park is 18 kilometers away, Bethlehem 40 km.

The city was founded in 1912. It is based on the eponymous Swiss town ( now part of Montreux ) named where former South African President Paul Kruger spent his last days in exile.

The city is known today as the home of numerous artists. He is a popular destination for excursions through its many art galleries and cafes.
