Clarion (instrument)

The Clairon originally denoted a signal trumpet in the military, which had no valves or other mechanisms to affect the sound. This can only nature sounds are played.

The Clairon was invented in 1822 in France by the manufacturer Antoine Courtois. First, a signal instrument of the infantry, it was taken over in 1831 by the military musician.

The name Clairon also referred to an organ stop. This Lingualregister has conical, extended upwards cup; the appearance is similar to the trumpet in the 4' - position.
