Clas Alströmer

Claes Alströmer (also Clas, class or Klaus Alströmer; born August 9, 1736, in Alingsås, † March 5, 1794 in Gåsevadsholm ) was a Swedish merchant and naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Alstr. ".

Life and work

Claes Alströmer, a son of Jonas and Margareta Alströmer Clason, studied in Uppsala natural history, chemistry and economics. Among his teachers included Carl Linnaeus and Johan Gottschalk Wallerius. In addition to his commercial activities led Alströmer study tours to Southern and Western Europe and cultivated plants brought in his private botanical garden. Among other things, he visited 1760-1764 Southern Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and England. Claes Alströmer was married to Sara Katarina Sahlgren.

Carl Linnaeus named after him the genus Alstroemeria, the type genus of the Liliaceae family Inca.
