Claus Westermann

Claus Westermann ( born October 7, 1909 in Berlin, † June 11, 2000 in Heidelberg ) was a German Protestant theologian and pastor who served in Berlin and Heidelberg taught Old Testament, among others in the tray.

Life

Claus Westermann studied theology at the universities of Tübingen, Marburg and Berlin. In Tübingen, he became a member of the fraternity AV Hedgehog. In 1933 he passed the first theological examination before the Protestant Consistory Berlin.

Then the Vicariate initially followed in Arnswalde. At this time he already belonged to a member of the Confessing Church. In Berlin, he joined the emerging under Martin Niemöller seminary of the Confessing Church. In other vicars, he moved later in the Naumburg Seminary under Gerhard Gloege. He was repeatedly arrested by the Gestapo. 1940-45 he performed military service and was 1945-46 in Soviet captivity, during which he began his studies of the Old Testament with a Luther Bible.

1946-1952 was Westermann pastor in Berlin, including the Burckhardt House, since 1949 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church as pastor.

In Zurich he became in 1949 a doctorate in Walther Zimmerli Theodor ( 1907-1983 ) with his work, " Praising God in the Psalms " to the theological doctor. At the Church University of Berlin, he was then lecturer, from 1954 the holder of a professorship. From 1958 to 1978 he was professor of Old Testament Theology at the University of Heidelberg until he was retired in 1978.
