Clayton is a city in Montgomery County and Miami County in the U.S. state of Ohio. At the 2000 census the city had 13,347 inhabitants. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. 1998 Clayton merged with the remainder of Randolph Township.
Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead is located in Clayton. In this book, Clayton is represented as an archetype of the rural United States, in contrast to cosmopolitan New York City, where most of the action takes place.
Geography
Clayton geographical coordinates are 39 ° 52 'N, 84 ° 21' W39.860661111111 - 84.355080555556 ( 39.86066, -84.35508 ). The Ohio State Route 49 used to lead through the center of the city, but is now headed west of Clayton on Interstate 70, which passes south of the city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 48.1 km ², of which 47.8 km ² of land and 0.3 km ² omitted ( = 0.59 %) to water. The Wolf Creek North Branch flows through the city from northwest to southeast.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were 13,347 persons Clayton. The population density was 279.5 people per km ². There were 5193 housing units at an average 108.7 per km ². The population consisted of Clayton's 87.14 % White, 9.87 % African American, 0.15 % Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander, 0.30 % reported other races to belong and 1.03 % from two or more races. 0.90 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Clayton distributed to 4975 households out of which 35.7 % were living in children under 18 years. 65.4 % married couples living together, 8.6 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6 % were non-families. 19.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 6.5 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size is 3.05.
The population was spread out with 26.9 % under the, 6.7 % 18 -24- year-old, 27.2 % 25 -44- year-old, 28.0% 45-64 year olds and 11.2 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 39 years. Each 100 women accounted 97.9 men. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women, 94.7 men.
