Clear view screen

A centrifugal disc ( also clear screen or Kent - disc ) is used on ships (as well as snow blowers, " snowstorm enabled vehicles " and formerly steam locomotives) the improved visibility in rain or spray. They are predominantly used to the sight-glass on the command bridge, cabs and cabs. In addition to use on vehicles they are also used on milling machines and lathes.

Operation

Round, about 35 to 50 cm centrifugal disc is enclosed in a frame which is connected via a radial web to the center of the disk ( the axis ) and a electric motor disposed therein. The motor rotates the disk in fast rotation (about 1500rpm 1); by centrifugal force splashing rain and be flung outwards, enabling a continuously clear vision out. The discs are often heated to prevent in extreme cold the settling of ice and condensation on the disc inside.

In contrast to conventional wipers centrifugal discs are relatively low maintenance, as no parts need to be cleaned of saline sea water.
