Cleopas

Cleopas is primarily known as one of the two disciples to whom the risen Jesus on their way to Emmaus met (Luke 24:18 ).

It is controversial whether Cleopas with Cleophas / Clopas is the same that is mentioned in John 19.25 at Mary of Cleophas, who was standing under the cross of Jesus. Cleopas suggests the Greek name Kleopatros while Clopas is known as a Semitic name. Richard Bauckham sees Clopas a rare Semitic form of the Greek Cleopas and assumes due to the rarity of the name, that Cleopas is the same as mentioned in Hegesippus Clopas and was among the relatives of Jesus who played a leading role in the Palestinian Jewish Christian community.

According to Hegesippus was Cleopas the brother of Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, and the father of Simon or Simeon, who succeeded his cousin James as head of the Jerusalem church was by Eusebius of Caesarea.

In the writings of Hippolytus of Rome and Dorotheus Cleopas is mentioned himself as the second Bishop of Jerusalem ( according to James ).
