Clew Bay

The Clew Bay ( Irish: Cuan Mó, literally " ball of Bay " ) is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean in County Mayo. Here you will find a large number of drumlins - a scenic formation of the ice age. According to official figures, there are 117 islands in the bay. South of the bay rises on the mainland of Croagh Patrick, which is an important pilgrimage site for Ireland. Clare Iceland is a large island at the entrance of the bay. Southwest of the cove are Louisburgh, Lecanvey, Murrisk, and Westport, are north and west of Mulranny Newport, at the entrance to the Achill Islands.

In the Middle Ages the bay was owned by the O'Malley family. During the Irish Civil War, 400 soldiers were landed to occupy the towns of Westport and Castlebar at bay.

The legend says that there were 365 islands in the bay, one for each day of the year. Contrary to legend, whose number is, however, much lower.
