Clothing sizes

The standard size (also dress size or dress size) is the size of more modern clothing (clothing ), which depends on the height of the wearer. The size system is different in men and women. In addition, a distinction is made between European and American sizes. For shoe size and in the Men's Outerwear ( shirt) There are separate systems of units.

Determination of body measurements

The European standard EN 13402 standardizes the data by respectively the relevant (body) values are given in centimeters, for example waistband and leg length in trousers, as is usual with jeans for a long time, but there are in inches ( 1 "= 2, 54 cm) and, according to the U.S. customs, instead of the inseam inseam. This can be done either by text or a scaled diagram of a human body. The dimensions are taken into account:

Calculation

Currently, the clothing sizes are usually specified according to the following formula: Size = Chest divided by two. In women, 6 inches are subtracted from this value. Calculation example: For a chest circumference of 88 cm 88/ 2 = dress size 44 (men). 88/2-6 = 44-6 = size 38 ( women). Since this definition but is not binding, the clothing sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Children

For children's clothing, the clothing size indicates the body height in centimeters. For example, the size of 164 children who are tall to 164 cm. The table includes common sizes. Besides these, there are smaller sizes for toddlers ( from 56 ) and intermediate sizes in 6- cm intervals ( 110, 122, 134, etc.). These ages are based on the median ( 50 % percentile ) of the body length.

The girls have sizes from 152 a smaller waist than the boys' sizes, but a larger hip circumference. Up until about the size of 164, the dresses with increasing size are slimmer. The XS / M / L sizes are used for children's clothing especially for T -shirts, climbing equipment and sporting goods.

For narrow or heavily built children there are special sizes. For about 4 inches narrower small size respectively for the same body length, the normal size is halved (eg 82 instead of 164). For about 6 inches more big size is 800 added ( eg 964 instead of 164) and for the 14 cm more extra large size 600 is added ( 764 instead of 164). Sometimes these sizes are denoted by XXS, XXL and XXXL, which can lead to confusion with the letter sizes listed above are based solely on the body height.

Gentlemen

In the outerwear clothing size is specified in either European or American sizes. This size is considered to normally for the entire outerwear, also for men's trousers. The number to the European sizing is based on the Chest. An exception is the shirt size that depends on the neck circumference in centimeters. The pants are seen again on the American model by waist and inseam, so the length of the trouser leg from the crotch to the hem, given frequently and especially in jeans. The unit is the inch (2.54 cm).

  • Normal size = ( Chest maximum -1 ) / 2
  • Short size ( stocky ) = Normal Size / 2
  • Belly size (normal) = Normal size 1
  • Long size (slender ) = (Normal size - 1) * 2

These dimensions are approximate values. Exact dimensions are depending on article.

Ladies

The normal sizes ( 32-44 ) for women assume that a woman is 164-170 cm tall. For smaller women, there is the short sizes ( 16-22), for greater long- sizes ( 64-88 ). The figure was created by the European size halving the chest circumference in centimeters minus 6 ( so that other size specifications can be achieved than in men). Twice the normal size specification results in the long size, stocky size is determined by halving the normal size. Within a series differ only in the sizes of waist circumference (and hence also in the chest and hip measurements ). The standard size for the upper and lower parts may differ depending on the character, because either the Chest (blouses, sweaters, jackets ) or the waist ( skirts, pants ) is crucial, while the body size (except tights), the waist circumference (except bodice ) and other measures are used only as secondary parameters ( eg clothes, one piece sets).

In trade, the normal sizes are almost exclusively available. The Long and Short sizes are available, however, only in exceptional cases.

Conversion international sizes

Many internationally famous designers come from Italy or France; these are countries in which the clothing sizes are different from the usual in Germany. As a guideline: The Italian sizes are around three values higher than the German, the French a. A German Gr. 38, for example, corresponds to Gr. 44 in Italy and Gr. 40 in France. However, an exact conversion is not possible because the conditions adopted by the manufacturers of the individual body measurements to each other in southern Europe are different than in Germany (for example, at a given Chest: smaller body size, narrower hips ).

In Asian countries, the three standard sizes are often identified by the Chinese glyphs: S小,中M, L with大.

U.S. Sizes

(: For example XXS or XXXL down and up through additional 'X' expandable) prevalent in sports and leisure clothing sizes S -XL in the U.S. for men and women. The uppercase letters for the following designations are: 'S' for small ( small), 'M' for medium (medium ), 'L' for large ( large), ' XL' for extra large ( very large).

In the clothing sizes for women is in the even numbers from 0 ( approximately XXS ) to 20 ( about XXL) by counting, by default of 4 (approx. German clothing size 32) to 18 (about German clothing size 46); a size 12 corresponds approximately to the sportswear size L and a German 40th Moreover, there are special sizes eg for slim ( Misses ) and small ( Petite ) women, which is indicated by a corresponding letter according to the size number, for example 6P for size 6 Petite.

In the men's clothing, the German count is reduced by 10 variables: the German standard size number therefore corresponds to the 48-56 American 38-46; a German 52 So American 42 The approximate equivalents to German short -, normal - and Lang-/Schlank-Größen be, by attaching one of the initials 'S' for short ( short), ' R' is for regular ( normal) 'L' for long ( long) or, rarely, "XL" for extra long ( very long ) to the appropriate standard clothing size marked: thus corresponds to an American men's clothing size 40 German 50 then corresponds to 40L of the German 98, and the American 40S of the German 25th

For very large (not necessarily slim ) or very obese men ( waist sizes ) are available in the U.S. by some manufacturers in the sportswear sector also special sizes Tall (large) and Big ( obese ). These sizes are graduated in TL (about a generous standard size L with very long sleeves for tall men ), TX, T2L, T3L, T4L, etc. or B1X ( roughly XL size, with short sleeves and a broader basis for obese men), B2X, B3X etc. to B6X or higher.

For pants - even with jeans sold in Europe - normally two values are passed, namely first the waistband and the pants inseam each in inches ( inches ). The default order for men for the waistband is this: 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38 and 40 An American Confederation of 34 inches is about the German men's clothing size 50 for women the values start to default at 25 inches. The inside leg lengths are specified by default for both men and ladies in the even number 30 (short), 32 (normal), 34 ( long) or 36 (very long). A typical representation for waistband 32 and leg length 34 would be 32 / 34th By appropriate variation of the two values also matching pants for example, obese, short men ( about 40 /30) or large, slim men can ( about 29 /36) or generated equally to women. If these numbers multiplied by the factor 2.54 to waistband and pants inseam result in centimeters.

Redetermination of body sizes

The measurement of body sizes in a broad sense and the determination of their distribution on behalf of the textile industry in Germany traditionally take the researchers at the Hohenstein Institutes in Boennigheim near Stuttgart means of extensive series measurements. The penultimate traditional survey of German men took place in the 1970s, the last but one of the women followed in the mid -1990s.

In August 2007, the researchers mainly from the apparel industry ( producers and distributors ) and some automobile manufacturers began on behalf of 80 companies a new German series of measurement, for the first time by means of a laser full body scanner, which included 13,362 people (men, women and children) 6-87 years. The name of the project was " SizeGERMANY " and initial hypothesis was that the population has become more bigger and hüftstärker, so that men in particular find it increasingly difficult to find suitable clothes as it is not made up due to old numbers ( similar projects have been with the French, British, Dutch and Spaniards performed). The results were presented in mid- February 2009 and are not publicly available, but are only available to clients who were involved, depending on the amount of related data with amounts 5000-75000 euros to the cost.
