Cnesterodon

Zehnfleckkärpfling ( Cnesterodon decemmaculatus )

Cnesterodon is a genus of viviparous carp from the southeastern South America.

Features

It is small permanent representative of the live-bearing tooth carp, which reach a maximum length of 4.5 cm, the males stay much smaller. The anal fin of males is typically transformed for the subfamily to a gonopodium. The gonopodium is long and has at the top of a hook-shaped extension. The fish are inconspicuous gray yellow with silvery belly and act partly glassy translucent. The Zehnfleckkärpfling ( Cnesterodon decemmaculatus ) has a row of black spots on the body side.

Cnesterodon species colonize in large numbers quiet waters such as ponds and ditches which are rich in vegetation and in the summer can reach temperatures of over 30 ° C.

System

The most closely related genera are Phalloceros and Phallotorynus that also inhabit southeastern South America. The three genera are grouped in tribes Cnesterodontini.
