The Coastal -Class is a series of ro-pax vessels, on the basis of the ship's draft ropax 1600 - originated Double Ender Flensburg shipbuilding company. The ships of the class were built in the period 2007 to 2008.

The ferries of the Coastal class is the most modern Ro-Ro ships of the company BC Ferries.

Invitation of construction

The construction of the three ships was announced worldwide. At the tender, a total of 14 participants involved. Of the 14 offers were three from Canada, the other from the United States of America and the rest of the world. The decision to build these ships outside Canada, was unpopular in British Columbia. Crucial to the success of the Flensburg shipbuilding company was the price. The total purchase price of the three new ships was at the time of award of the contract about 325 million Canadian dollars ( CAD) (September 2004). According to BC Ferries this offer was lower by 40 percent than the offer of cheapest Canadian shipyard. Also with decisive was the willingness of Flensburg successful shipbuilding company to partially accept substantial penalties for non-performance of the contract.

Ships of the series

BC Ferries has from this class the three ferry Coastal Renaissance, Coastal Inspiration and Coastal Celebration in operation. The names of the vessels were determined in a competition in 2005: All three of the vessels fly the Canadian flag and have the home port of Victoria.

The Coastal Renaissance was built under the hull number 733. The keel-laying ceremony took place on 19 April 2007 on January 2, the launching. The ship was delivered on 26 October at BC Ferries.

The Coastal Inspiration was built as the second ship of the series under the hull number 734. The keel-laying ceremony took place on 31 August 2007 on May 2, the launching. The ship was delivered on 8 February 2008 at BC Ferries.

The Coastal Celebration was built as the third ship of the series under the hull number 735. The keel-laying ceremony took place on 14 December 2007 on 3 September, the launching. The delivery of the ship to BC Ferries on May 8, 2008.

The vessels in this series have replaced at putting old ships of the former Victoria class.

Technical information

The ship propulsion is diesel electric. The power for the drive motors by two MaK diesel engines ( Type: 8M32C ) having a capacity of about 7885 kW. As traction motors serve two electric motors manufacturer Sachsenwerk (type: DKMUX 1040 10WE ) with a capacity of 11,000 kW.
