The Hanseatic City of Lübeck had long two different coats of arms which can also be found as a double coat of arms: one with the imperial eagle as a symbol of the kingdom of freedom (which enjoyed the city from 1226 to 1937 ) and one shared with the Hanseatic colors silver red, called Lubeck shield.

Formation

The origins of the Lubeck shield is not definite evidence; likely, however, that this is derived from the Hanseatic flag, like the first time is occupied on a ship seal from the year 1230. The waving flag on the mast, it is believed, already represents the colors red and white

1280

This is also the oldest reference to its own national emblem of the city. The imperial eagle occurs somewhat later. The first evidence are coins from the beginning of the 14th century. The colors of the shield are not likely to get from the Counts of Holstein, but from the national coat of arms. Finally, they find themselves together on documents.

Coat of arms of the Free Imperial City

Around 1450, then finally the two coats of arms were merged. The imperial eagle was on the Hanseatic coat of arms as chest plate. Of today's run, making it the oldest coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein.

The coat of arms in the French Empire

The coat of arms of Lübeck the years 1811 to 1813 led the city of Lübeck during their membership of the French Empire. After the incorporation of Lübeck in the French Empire on 1 January 1811, the city received a new coat of arms, which replace the previous coat of arms of Lübeck and the Lübeck nunmehrige position should emphasize as communities within the French state. In this coat of arms, designed by the Conseil du Sceau, the traditional red and white coat of arms was on a pair of black eagle wings, which represented a rudimentary acquisition of the former Lübeck double eagle. The combination of wings and coat of arms was on a silver ( white ) shield.

Since Lübeck had at the same time with its integration to France to receive the status of a Bonne Ville de l'Empire, so a nominally special town of the French Empire, the shield an item was added, which was mandatory for all Bonnes Villes: A red shield head, in the three golden bees were imperial.

The coat of arms was granted by the Lübeck one on June 13, 1811 signed by Napoléon Bonaparte crest letter and out of the city until 1813. After the liberation from French rule and the restoration of independence as a city-state, the traditional coat of arms was reintroduced.

Coat of arms of the municipality

The Greater Hamburg Act of 1937 ended the kingdom of freedom of the city by annexing them to the state of Prussia and as a part of Schleswig -Holstein was. However, it allowed the same time to run the old coat of arms on.
