Cobourg Peninsula

Geographical location

The Cobourg Peninsula is a peninsula 350 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia. They are very well indented with small and large bays. Its area is 2100 km ². It is sparsely populated. It has a population of between 20 and 30 and is spread over 5 Family Outstations:

  • Araru Point ( Araru )
  • Ardbinae ( Adbanae, trepang Bay)
  • Gumuragi ( Gumeragi, Reef Point )
  • Meriah ( Mariah, Raffles Bay)
  • Irgul ( Irgul Point)

Further facilities include a lighthouse Cape Don Light in the far west, as well as the nearby airfield Cape Don Airport ( ICAO code YCPD, grass, runway 1800 meters, opened on 8 November 1989), the ranger station Algarlalgari ( Black Point ) and the Camping Ngardimardi ( Smith Point ).

In addition, the settlement Port Essington was on the peninsula. The Bowen Strait separates the peninsula to the east of the Croker Iceland. In the west it is separated by the Strait of Dundas Melville Island.

The Cobourg Peninsula is part of the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, which also still includes some offshore islands. As a tourist attraction it is known for its pristine wilderness.
