Cochlicopidae

Common smooth worm ( Cochlicopa lubrica )

The smoothness snails ( Cochlicopidae; junior synonym of L. Cionellidae Pfeiffer, 1879), also called African land snails [Note 1], a family from the suborder of terrestrial snails are ( gastropod ). These are mostly small or very small forms which are widespread Holarctic.

Features

The dextral housing are usually small and bulbous conical. They measure about 7 millimeters in height and have to about 7 turns. The spindle is flattened or rounded down. The surface is brownish, sometimes with a slight reddish or greenish tone and smooth - shiny. In the mouth projections ( "teeth" ) or thickening ( " Calli " ) protrude. The housings have no navel gap. The prostate is band-like, the epiphallus without accessory organs. The inner surface of the penis has no particular internal structures. An Appendix to the penis may be present or absent. The stem of the spermathecae is relatively short and slender; the diverticulum, if present at all, is relatively short.

Geographic occurrence and life

The family is widespread in Europe, North America and North Asia ( Holarctic ). They live in humid forests in moss and leaves, in flood plains and calcareous marshes, but also on drier sites (eg slope turf). The animals put on a few large, soft-shelled eggs, which are covered with earth. The young hatch after about 14 days.

System

The smoothness of the snail family is usually referred to in the literature as Cochlicopidae. Has priority but the older name Cionellidae, which is based on the younger synonym of Cochlicopa, Cionella Jeffreys, 1829. However, this name has rarely been used and therefore probably be regarded as a forgotten name ( nomen oblitum ). The Cochlicopidae are one of two families of the superfamily Cochlicopoidea. At this superfamily in addition to the Nominatfamilie ( Cochlicopidae ) is also expected the family Amastridae. The Cochlicopidae family of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) into two subfamilies, Cochlicopinae Pilsbry, 1900 and Azecinae Watson, 1920 further subdivided. Other authors treat the Azecinae as the Cochlicopidae equal family or list the type genus Azeca under the Cochlicopidae, ie consider Azecidae / Azecinae as a synonym of Cochlicopidae / Cochlicopinae (cf. Schileyko, 1998). After Madeira et al. (2010) are related to the Azecidae / Azecinae not get any closer to the Cochlicopidae, ie taxon is a separate families in each case.
