Cogniard brothers

Charles- Theodore ( born April 30, 1806 Paris, † May 13, 1872 ibid ) and Jean -Hippolyte Cogniard (* November 20, 1807 also in Paris, † February 6, 1882 ibid ) are playwrights and French theater directors. She co-authored the 200 comedies, revues, fairy tale plays and operettas.

Life and work

Theodor Cogniard and Hippolyte Cogniard were known as the " Siamese twins of Vaudeville " known and directed the Théâtre de la Porte Saint -Martin from 1840 to 1845 together. After Hippolyte took unit alone for the Théâtre du Vaudeville and 1854-1869, the Théâtre des Variétés, where he made the operetta known and prevailed. Under his directorate Jacques Offenbach created his most important works: The beautiful Helena, Bluebeard, The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein and La Périchole. In 1869 he acquired on behalf of his son Léon Cirque Impérial, the rename it to Théâtre du Château d' Eau and the line he takes over after the premature death of Léon in March 1870.

As playwrights, the brothers Cogniard of 1830 produced an impressive selection of pieces, fairy tale games and revues for which they occasionally collaborated with major authors such as Hector Crémieux, Louis François Clairsville or Paul Siraudin. The fairy tale La Chatte blanche from 1852 is considered her greatest success.

Chauvinism

The term chauvinism goes back to the figure of Nicolas Chauvin (c. 1790), which under the leadership of the two brothers came to the performance in the play La tricolore cockade 1831. The multi mutilated soldier Nicholas Chauvin was indeed personally honored because of his sacrifice of Napoleon Bonaparte high, but after the Napoleonic era, he became a figure of fun. Only with the feminist emancipation in the mid-20th century, the term chauvinism should get a different meaning.
