Cogset

As a sprocket assembly or sprocket set, even cassette is referred to the back of the drive in a bicycle derailleur. The sprocket assembly is releasably connected to the rear wheel hub.

Basically, two types can be distinguished: Until the early 1990s, the wreaths were screwed; they also contained the freewheel. Today, the freewheel is in a separately fitted onto the hub freewheel body and the ring gear packages are attached to this freewheel body and positively connected to the hub. They are then fixed with a locking ring. Such gear packages are also called cartridges or plug wreaths. The plug wreaths have become established quickly, as they almost only have advantages. The change is possible and easier with fewer special tools. Normally, a plug wreath is also lighter, the gradation can be selected individually, what with its knowledge and disassembly of the entire ring is possible with freewheels.

In many cartridges - especially in the racing area - you can replace the individual sprockets, because they are not fixed to each other. When installing these packages you have to pay attention to the correct order and the correct fitting of the washers. In some packages, the individual rings and the intermediate discs are, however, fixedly connected with one another, so that the package forms a unit and can only be changed completely. In return, will be very fast and it can lower installation mistakes are made. With a chain whip the sprocket assembly can be held during disassembly.

When describing the number of teeth of the smallest and the largest sprocket, one also speaks of the capacity of the package. Cassettes for road bikes have a low capacity and this only slight differences in the numbers of teeth of adjacent sprockets, so very small gear increments. For mountain bikes, however a large capacity is important, which is achieved by larger gear increments. The smallest built wreaths have 10 teeth, the largest up to 32 ( Road ) or 42 ( mountain bike ).

Because cartridges are usually combined with a chainring set of two or three chain rings, resulting in the intermediate speed range, a range of overlap, can be chosen within which between approximately or even almost exactly the same translations. That's hectic racing situations of advantage, as not always been a parallel shift is necessary or can be selected for this an appropriate time (see figure).

For derailleurs instead of the usual 1/2 " x 1/ 8" bicycle chain ( outer width by 9 mm ) is required with chain lock specific, narrower chains
