Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory ( CSHL ) is a research institution that consists of several laboratories at Cold Spring Harbor, New York, on Long Iceland. The main research interests are in cancer research, neurobiology, plant genetics, genomics and bioinformatics. The research center operates among others, a graduate program (Watson School of Biological Sciences). Nine Nobel Laureates were previously at CSHL active.

1890, the laboratory was established as a department of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. 1904 founded the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Station for Experimental Evolution at Cold Spring Harbor. 1921, the laboratory was reorganized to the Carnegie Institution Department of Genetics. James Watson ( co-discoverer of the structure of DNA ) was for 35 years Director and later Chancellor of the laboratory. Currently, cancer biologist Bruce Stillman President ( as of 2011).
