Bruce William Stillman

Bruce William Stillman ( born October 16, 1953 in Melbourne) is an Australian biologist and basic researchers. He is President of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a renowned research facility in Cold Spring Harbor on Long Iceland, New York.

Life

Bruce Stillman earned a bachelor's degree in 1975 from the University of Sydney in 1979 and a Ph.D. at the Australian National University in Canberra. As a postdoctoral fellow Stillman went to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the U.S. state of New York and stayed in another always at this institution: since 1985 as a professor, since 1992 as director of the Cancer Research Center from 1994 to 2003 as director of the institution as a whole ( in the follow- by James Watson) and since 2003 as its president. In addition, he has been a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at the Stony Brook University in Stony Brook on Long Iceland since 1992.

Work

Bruce Stillman is considered pioneer in the study of DNA replication and chromosomal inheritance. Stillman and his colleagues were able to identify a number of proteins that are required for DNA replication. Of special interest is the nucleosome. It succeeded Stillman and staff to replicate the simian virus 40 the complete replication machinery in vitro. Stillman's work contributed significantly to the understanding of the replication fork in eukaryotic cells at.

Stillman is one of the editors of the prestigious journal Cell and is a member of the Board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also a member of the scientific advisory boards of numerous institutions, professional societies ( including the National Research Council and the National Cancer Institute ) and journals.
