Collins Bartholomew

Collins Bartholomew, formerly John Bartholomew and Son is an old card publishing house, which was originally based in Edinburgh. He is currently one of Harper Collins.

History

The company was founded by John Bartholomew Senior (1805-1861) around the year 1826. His son John Bartholomew Junior (1831-1893) and his grandson John George Bartholomew (1860-1920) brought the company to meaning. John Bartholomew Junior is one of the pioneers of the use of regional colors.

Especially John George Bartholomew developed the company into a publisher of his own works. Well-known works were The Times Survey Atlas of the World (1922 ) and later the Times Atlas of the World ( 1955-60 ). Among the popular products in the UK included from the 1970s, the map 1:100,000 National map series emerged from the series Half Inch to the Mile Maps in competition with the products of the Ordnance Survey.

In 1989 the company merged with the publisher based in Glasgow HarperCollins and so became part of the empire of Rupert Murdoch's News International.
