Coloconger raniceps

Coloconger is a genus of bony fish in the order of the eel-like ( Anguilliformes ). The genus is placed in a separate family Colocongridae. The species live in the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Specimens of the genus were at depths of 270 - 1134 meters caught.

Features

The animals are the least elongated eel-like fish and 37 to 90 centimeters long. Their muzzle is not pointed, but blunt, the anus is located far behind the center of the body. In English they are therefore called "short -tail eels ". The fish have no teeth on the vomer. The lateral line is complete, most of the pores end in small tubes. The pectoral fins are well developed. Pelvic fins are missing, as in all eel-like. Coloconger types have 142-163 vertebrae.
