Colter's Hell

Colter 's Hell is a volcanic area in the Shoshone River near Cody, Wyoming. It was named after the trapper John Colter, probably the first white man pushed forward there in winter 1807/1808. Sometimes Colter 's Hell was mistakenly confused with the territory that became Yellowstone National Park, which was often referred to prior to its official designation as a land of great volcanoes, field of boiling water or similar cases. Similarly also Colter 's Hell has been described.

Other early descriptions of Colter 's Hell are from the trapper Joseph Meek from 1830 as well as of Plenty Coups, a chieftain of the Absarokee Indians, who camped with his people in 1840 at the extinct volcano.
