Colyton (Devon)

Colyton is a city in England, United Kingdom. Administratively it belongs to the district of East Devon in the county of Devon.

Transport and geographical location

The city lies at an altitude of 15 meters above sea level in the east to 70 meters in the west. The English Channel is located about three kilometers south of the city. The nearest international airport is 25 kilometers west lying Exeter International Airport. The road with the number A3052 runs less than a kilometer south of Colyton.

History

During the time of the Roman Empire, a settlement was south of the present city created. The next settlers in the area were the Saxons who helped the city to a certain level of wealth. In the 15th century, Colyton was one of the richest places in the area. Henry VIII had in 1539 the owner of the place Henry Courtney heads and confiscated their property. 1546 or 1549 inhabitants Colytons bought the place from King Henry VIII back. Henry VIII gave the town the right to three days of the week to hold a market. 1851 2,504 people lived in the city.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the church of St. Andrew is from the 15th century. It also houses a restored cross which was built by the Saxons between 800 and 900.

From the original station building from 1868, the Seaton Tramway travels through two nature reserves in the city situated on the English Channel Seaton.
