Comandante Ramona

Commander Ramona (* 1959, † January 6, 2006 in Tonala, Chiapas, Mexico), Spanish: Comandante Ramona was a member of the Tzotzil and leader of the Mexican Zapatistenrebellen.

Although almost entirely monolingual in the Tzotzil language and illiterate, " Comandante Ramona " was one of the leading figures of the Zapatistenaufstands against the Mexican government since 1994. In January 1994, she commanded the taking of San Cristóbal de las Casas. In the whole of Latin America, dedicated the 1.40 meter tall and always masked rebel for the rights of indigenous women. She was also active globalization opponent.

The Tzotzil commander, a professional embroiderer, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1996 and could only live on thanks to a kidney transplant. After transplantation Ramona withdrew from the public until they at the first General Assembly of the " Other Campaign " in the Lacandon jungle ( Lacandon Jungle ) took part in the fall of 2005. Ramona was the first consultant of Subcomandante Marcos. In Mexico and Latin America, it became a symbol of the struggle of indigenous women for their rights. She died at the age of 47 years from the consequences of their cancer.
