Communist Party of Uruguay

The Partido Comunista de Uruguay (PCU ) ( German: Communist Party of Uruguay ) is a political party in Uruguay.

It was formed on September 21, 1920 from the Socialist Party of Uruguay ( PS), who spoke out in a majority of the members for the conversion into a Communist Party. This resulted in the elimination of the PSU under Emilio Frugoni result. Leading figure of the party was a long time Eugenio Gómez, who was its chairman from its founding to 1955. He was succeeded by Rodney Arismendi as Secretary General. The first major electoral success of the PCU dates from 1946. The party plays only a minor role in the party structure Uruguay. Official press organ of the party is the weekly newspaper El Popular.
