Emilio Frugoni

Dr. Emilio Frugoni ( born March 30, 1880 in Montevideo, † August 28, 1969 ) was a Uruguayan politician, lawyer, poet, essayist and journalist. He is the founder of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay and was its first delegate in the House of Representatives.

Life

Previous activities

Born in 1880 as one of four children of Domingo Frugoni and Josefina Queirolo to Frugoni joined during the Civil War José Batlle y Ordóñez, reaching the rank of lieutenant. In December 1904 he wrote his Profesión de fe socialista, which was published in the newspaper El Día. This article was the impetus for the founding of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay. 1910, the PSU was founded.

Opposition to the dictatorship

1920 ( in German: Communist Party of Uruguay ) at a convention in the Partido Comunista the PSU de Uruguay ( PCU) renamed. Frugoni rejected communism and founded the new PSU as anti-communist party. In the elections of 1928, the PCU received 3,911 votes, the PSU 2931. He ran into opposition to the dictator Gabriel Terra, was imprisoned and then went into exile. In 1942 he became Minister of Uruguay in the Soviet Union, but resigned from this post in 1946 and returned back to Montevideo, after he criticized Soviet policy hard.

Movimiento Socialista

In January 1963, Frugoni fell out with his party and founded the party Movimiento Socialista, with which he took in 1966 to the elections. After his death, the Movimiento Socialista a close alliance came in with the PSU and is now part of the ruling Frente Amplio.
