The Chilean major airport Aeropuerto Internacional Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez airport is the main airport of the country. It is located in Santiago de Chile in the district Pudahuel. Usually he is referred to by the name Aeropuerto de Pudahuel.

History

In 1961 began the construction of the Aeropuerto Pudahuel to replace the old Aeropuerto de Los Cerrillos. On February 9, 1967, the airport was opened. In 1994 he received a new international terminal. The complete move from the old buildings in one of the most modern terminals in South America took place in 2001.

On March 19, 1980, the airport received its present name Arturo Merino Benítez. This was the first commander of the Chilean Air Force Fuerza Aérea de Chile and founder of the Chilean airline LAN Airlines.

Since 7 July 1998, the SCL Terminal Aéreo de Santiago has a 15 - year concession to manage the airport. The air traffic control is subject to the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil.

Currently there is a discussion to rename the airport Aeropuerto Internacional Pablo Neruda. Pablo Neruda was honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature of 1971.

Airlines

Pudahuel is home to the airport and main hub of LAN Airlines. It will be flown targets, especially in South America, but also in Central and North America and Europe. LAN flies daily from Santiago via Madrid to Frankfurt. Three European airlines fly to Santiago de Chile. Air France flies non-stop service to Paris and Iberia serves the route Madrid -Santiago also nonstop.
