Comorian independence referendum, 1974

A referendum on independence in the French Comoros 1974 on 22 December 1974, the then French islands of Komorenarchipels in the Indian Ocean: performed (main islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mayotte Mohéli ). According to the original schedule independence of France should take place only in 1978 a referendum on independence. Demonstrations in 1973 resulted, however, that the referendum was preferred.

Results

94.57 % of voters voted for independence. Almost all the negative votes were cast on the island of Mayotte, the majority voted to remain with France so. On the island of Mohéli contrast, there were only five votes against independence in 6059 votes in favor. 93.3 % of eligible voters participated in the referendum.

As a result of the referendum declared the islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli as the Republic of the Comoros on July 6, 1975 independence, during Mayotte remained French.
