Comorian presidential election, 2010

The presidential elections in the Comoros were held in 2010 on November 7, with a second round on 26 December. On all three main islands of the Comoros, the gubernatorial elections were held for the islands on the same days. There had been an attempt to have them held until 27 November 2011 and to extend the term of office of the incumbent President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi until then, but the Constitutional Court had declared in May 2010 to be unconstitutional. The former - and still in office - Vice President Ikililou Dhoinine emerged from the elections as the winner.

Election procedures

Anjouan and Grande Comore Mohéli: On the Comoros presidency every four years between the three islands that make up the federal government of the Comoros changed. In this period it was Mohéli to ask the President. The reigning president, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, was of Anjouan and could not stand it.

The president is elected in two rounds: the first round of voted voters of Mohéli in primaries on the candidate off and the three candidates with the most votes will enter the second round, where then choose the voters of all the islands the President of the victory needs the majority of votes.

Candidates

10 candidates were in the first round. President Sambi supported the incumbent Vice President Ikililou Dhoinine. Another candidate of the movement of the President was Mohamed Larifou Oukacha, its General Secretary, creating a possible crack in the fraction of the President was visible. Other candidates were Mohamed Said Fazul, the former governor of Mohéli and Zahariat Said Ahmed, the only female candidate.

Results

First round

Ikililou Dhoinine, Mohamed Said Fazul and Bianrifi Tarmidhi received the most votes in the primaries. Tarmidhis total votes, however, was taken by the Constitutional Court on 13 November from the count after it had declared the contents of the ballot boxes of several polling stations invalid. This came alongside Dhoinine and Fazul still Abdou Djabir in the second round.
